Announcing The Independent Commission on the Future of Oracy Education, hosted by Voice 21

The Independent Commission on the Future of Oracy Education, hosted by Voice 21, launches today at The Speaking Summit.

The Commission will be chaired by Geoff Barton, outgoing General Secretary of ASCL, and will provide a blueprint for a national entitlement for oracy education at all stages of statutory education in England. The launch of this Commission marks a turning point for oracy, bringing the voices and experiences of a groundswell of teachers to the corridors of Whitehall.

At Voice 21 we’re working with thousands of teachers across the UK who see the transformative effects of oracy in their classrooms every day, and we welcome the opportunity presented by the Commission to offer clear recommendations to support and amplify their practice.

It has been set up in response to growing recognition of the importance of spoken language to student learning and life chances and both increasing evidence and concern as to the impact of the consistency, quality, and accessibility of oracy education in schools across England; something that is at the heart of everything we do at Voice 21.

The Commission also provides a forum for experts across the sector to come together to discuss and debate the big questions in oracy education today. We’re looking forward to playing our part in these conversations, which are crucial to ensuring that oracy isn’t left to chance – that every child, in every classroom, receives the high-quality oracy education to which they are entitled, without exception.

We are excited to support the opening up of a much-needed conversation about oracy in England, and to see where The Independent Commission on the Future of Oracy Education takes this crucial discussion.
