As our digital world changes and the use of artificial intelligence becomes more normalised, both students and teachers are using it to support learning. This creates an important challenge for educators: how can we help young people think critically about the technology shaping their world?
Knowing where to begin talking to students about something as vast as AI within the curriculum can feel daunting. Oracy can help. By planning for structured discussions, students learn the oracy skills to support them in thinking critically, sharing their opinions and engaging with other people’s thoughts and ideas.
To support teachers in navigating these complex conversations, we are delighted to partner with STEM Learning to launch ‘Talking about AI’, a three-part booklet series. These booklets are designed to support teachers by giving them the knowledge and confidence to create a safe environment for honest conversations about AI and its impacts.
Each booklet in the series targets a key talking point about engaging with AI:
This first booklet explores the illusion that AI “knows” or “understands” things, and engages students with the question of who gets to define the problem AI claims to be the solution for.
This second booklet explores how digital tools encourage our engagement, helping students navigate uncertainty and build a healthier relationship with technology.
This final booklet explores the environmental footprint of AI through accessible, classroom-ready talk tasks.
Explore all the new ‘Talking about AI’ booklets today and start bringing these essential conversations into your classroom.
